Types of Hearing Loss
According to John Hopkins there are two types of hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss and conductive hearing loss.
Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when the nerve of hearing is the cause of hearing loss. This happens when the nerve has been injured by infection, virus, trauma, or age. This type of hearing loss is irreversible and can often be compensated for by the use of amplification with a hearing aid.
Conductive hearing loss occurs when the nerve of hearing is normal, but the sound is not getting to the nerve. This occurs when there is either obstruction of the ear canal or middle ear, or malfunction of the hearing apparatus. Fluid in the middle ear, infection, ear wax, and eardrum perforation are common causes for this type of loss. This type of hearing loss can often be corrected with an office procedure or surgery and seldom requires the use of a hearing aid. Consultation for hearing loss includes a thorough physical exam and often a hearing test performed by our Audiologist in the office.
What Should I Do?
Hearing problems are serious. The most important thing you can do if you think you have a hearing problem is to make an appointment with our Audiologist. An audiologist can measure your hearing. Dr. Weiss and our audiologist, Dr. Marilyn Pimentel work together to find the treatment that is right for you. If you need a hearing aid, Dr. Pimentel can help you find the right one. Although children must be seen by a physician before they can be fitted for a hearing aid, adults do not always see a physician.
Why Am I Losing My Hearing?
According to National Institute on Aging that hearing loss happens for many reasons. Some people lose their hearing slowly as they age. Another reason for hearing loss may be exposure to too much loud noise. This condition is known as noise-induced hearing loss. Many occupations result in hearing problems because of too much exposure to loud noise. Sometimes loud noise can cause a ringing, hissing, or roaring sound in the ears, called tinnitus.
Hearing loss can also be caused by a virus or bacteria, heart conditions or stroke, head injuries, tumors, and certain medicines.
